Another thing for my priority list...

I know I've said it before, but I just have to make reading the advanced manual for my Canon PowerShot a priority.

I was looking through some Flickr photos belonging to the glass doorknob, and her sweet treats set is just awesome. Of course it doesn't hurt that I'd like to eat just about everything she has taken a picture of, but I really love the lighting, depth, etc. in her shots.

And now I have hope; Flickr says the camera used to take the photos was a Canon PowerShot S500, which doesn't seem that different from my A540.

I just need to find some time (har har).

Gifts

So I found a great new reality tv show while I was on vacation. Of course, great means that it's pretty ridiculous... but for some reason I found it completely addicting. I guess they had a marathon going on very late one night, and I just kept watching episode after episode. If you haven't yet seen The Ultimate Coyote Ugly Search, then I suggest you do! I'm not even sure that I get the country music television here... probably not, but I can dream.

With all the overtime money I made the other week I decided that I should use at least a little bit of it to buy something nice for myself. I thought about getting a cute little iPod nano, but since I really don't listen to music that much and I rarely buy new music, I thought my money would be spent better with something else. I finally decided on a new computer monitor - 20.1" widescreen!

I love it. And dang, it's even cheaper now than when I bought it last week! Having an enormous widescreen monitor is excellent, everyone's blog looks amazing and games, which I was never that into before, are suddenly much more appealing.

I really like looking at people's photos with the new monitor. Last night I was looking on Facebook, and I found out that someone I knew in college (we took a class together) is engaged. He had just posted some pictures of his fiance, but something looked a little odd. She was clearly in another country, her eyes were always down, and she was always in very traditional dress with her parents standing close by. I realized that this is an arranged marriage!

I've never known anyone who has had an arranged marriage before. He seems completely thrilled about it, referring to her as "my" so-and-so. She didn't look that happy, but who knows, maybe she's excited about it too. The idea of an arranged marriage just baffles me. After all the work we put in to find that person who really understands us and makes us feel good, his marriage will be more about getting to know one another. Maybe that bonds a couple in a way I just can't understand. I don't really know enough (or anything) about arranged marriage to start going off about it, it was just something interesting that struck me when I saw that photo.

It's the Season for Love, Apparently!

At the end of last month I was thinking about how mine and boyfriend's anniversary was coming up soon. We had discussed it in early March when we decided to purchase the Wii; we split the cost and called it our anniversary present to eachother. We're a progressive couple?

I woke up Monday morning pretty grumbly... boyfriend was going to be off of work for a few days so he was still sleeping, and I was just absently checking celebrity gossip blogs. I glanced down at the clock on the computer screen and hovered over it for a moment.

Busted! It was our anniversary!

I don't know how the damn date just crept up on me. I'd been thinking about it in the back of my mind, but for some reason I just kept thinking it was far off. Good thing we had decided previously on the Wii as a gift, otherwise I'd be in the DOG HOUSE! We went out for some Coldstone Creamery after work and, as always, I had a great time.

When people ask me how long we've been dating, I get really squirrelly. Maybe I feel like they'll think there's something wrong with us for dating so long, even though I know we're very different people than we were after 2 years of dating, 4 years of dating, 5, 6, 7, and now 8 years of dating! That's right, I said it outloud and published it on the internet... 8 years!

We don't get into fights, we have similar goals and beliefs, we very supportive of eachother and love to try new things, we get along great and have fun, we don't always share the blankets but we usually share the remote control... sometimes I'll even share food (except for warm, fresh baked cookies and most kinds of cake)! It just keeps working; I can't explain it and I don't want to.

In other very exciting news, a good friend who recently got engaged took me out to dinner on Tuesday night. We enjoyed our Thai food, talked and laughed, and then she said, "I have something to ask you."

If it wasn't for her recently being engaged I would have sworn that she was about to propose to me! That was not the case, but she did ask me to be the Maid of Honor in her May 2008 wedding!

The cost of having lots of male friends led me to think that I'd never be lucky enough to be anyone's Maid of Honor. I'm extremely excited to help her with her wedding. There will probably be many funny incidents ahead, as neither of us have been planning our respective weddings since we were five years old, so we're not exactly experts on the topic. Luckily again there is a lot of information out there, and if there's one thing I'm good at it's looking things up!

Wikipedia tells me that my pre-wedding duties will include:

  • Traveling with the bride to help choose a wedding venue.
  • Helping to choose and address wedding invitations.
  • Going with the bride to help with the shopping for her wedding dress as well as the bridesmaid dresses.
  • Going with the bride to register for her wedding gifts.
  • Helping the bride with the seating arrangements.
  • Hosting and planning the bridal shower as well as the bachelorette party.
  • Maintaining communication and organization with the other bridesmaids.
  • Attending and assisting during the rehearsal dinner.
Piece of cake, right? No problemo! We'll see what the bride would like to add and/or subtract from that list in the future, and in the meantime I'll start stocking up on some Martha Stewart Weddings and Virginia Weddings magazines this weekend!

As always, any advice in this endeavor is more than welcome!

A Few of My Favorite Things

That is, a few of my favorite Christmas presents. Now that the holidays are over I have to get my kicks somehow...

That's right, someone loved me enough to get me the Williams-Sonoma SNOWMAN pan! Just wait until I have a chance to try out this baby. I'm sure it will bring hours of cake fun (if it's anything like the pumpkin pan)!

Yes, it's fiesta time at Seredne's! So bring over your entire family because my boyfriend's mother gave me enough Fiesta dinnerware to feed 'em all! (This isn't even all of it... lots of bowls were in the dishwasher.)

What you're looking at here is a recipe book that boyfriend put together for me. These are the divided sections he made, and there are tons of plastic sleeves for me to slip my favorite recipes into!

This doesn't need much explanation... The Cake Doctor is going to help bring me death by cupcakes!

It's kind of hard to tell what's going on here... don't pay attention to the weird crab, the hanging good luck elephants, or the bust of Thomas Jefferson. The featured present here is the glowy purple ball. It's from IKEA, and when it lights up it's awesome!

Unfortunately, this one isn't REALLY mine. I bought it for my boyfriend, but it's very worth mentioning! It's a calendar called 'Extraordinary Chickens'... I knew he had to have it! All the chickens are posed with dark, regal backgrounds. They are truly extraordinary chickens.
And sadly I can't take a picture one thing - my new Canon Powershot A540! This will hopefully mean more (and better) photos!

That's some secret, Victoria...

One of the things my mom got me for Christmas was some (much needed) new underwear from Victoria's Secret.

The sales clerk told my mom that if I didn't like the ones she picked out I could always return them - even if I'd already worn them.

Just thought the public should be disturbed like I am!

A Weekend to Remember

Friday night I was supposed to meet up with Jen, my friend from law school last year. After I got home from another fun 5pm meeting, I gave her a call. She was with another friend in the area, and that friend wanted to go get her nails done.

I felt a little dumped on. I thought it was my night to have Jen all to myself. And you know how I feel about getting nails done (or you can probably guess, based on my eyebrow rants). Two hours lately she was finally done watching her friend get her nails done, and the friend was now coming to dinner with us.

We met up at one of my favorite places for fun, Rock Bottom. Jen and I used to go to the one in Pittsburgh all the time, especially at key times such as during midterms or finals. We had some dinner, drinks and lots of laughs. But Jen's friend started losing her voice and getting sicker than apparently she had been the rest of the week. So they left; she didn't see my apt, and we didn't even get a picture or two together. I was bummed, and I was slightly intoxicated... not my favorite combination.

I know that she's living in South Carolina now and she doesn't get to see people often. She has to try to get in as many people as she can when she's around; that doesn't mean I have to like it. I had a great time with her. I forgot how easy she is to talk and joke with. I missed hearing her constant laugh. Any irritation at her friend is purely just jealously because I wanted more time.

Our friend Ray was supposed to come up for the weekend as well. He backed out because he said he had to finish working on his graduate level thesis. Boyfriend and I have a strong love and appreciation for academia, so of course we didn't balk when he started to waver. Also, I learned that I'm thanked on his acknowledgments page. That brings my number of thesis thank-yous to two graduate level theses and one undergraduate level thesis. I wouldn't hate being a professional muse, or at least a thesis muse... as long as it's nothing like Sharon Stone in that awful 1999 movie 'The Muse.' Turns out Ray just wanted to spend some quality time with his new girlfriend. Well, I guess that's forgivable too.

And it all worked out swimmingly, because I had one of the best weekends ever.

Saturday I convinced boyfriend to go to my favorite mall near us and finish up some Christmas shopping. Their holiday decorations were amazing, and I really enjoyed everything about being there. It was crowded, but not as bad as the mall we went to the weekend before. It was big, but not so big that it felt overwhelming.

Our friend Jeff happened to be in DC visiting some art shows he wanted to see. He metroed over to the mall and we all enjoyed a delicious Thai dinner. I got them to go to the Hallmark store outside with me, and I finally found the perfect gift for boyfriend's mother - A Very Merry Trio. It's a snowman and two penguins, and then dance to music and rattle bells.

Anyone remember Billy the Big-mouthed Bass? Most people bought him as a joke gift or for someone they really didn't like. My boyfriend's mother got it because she thought it was great. She also has singing stuffed dogs, a witch portrait that sticks out its tongue and makes fun of you when you walk buy, a talking/singing Frankenstein door knocker, and lots of other things I'm trying to forget. My only hope is that she doesn't buy A Very Merry Trio before I can give it to her.

Well if having my two favorite men as shopping buddies wasn't great enough, we also went to Cold Stone Creamery, watched my nudey neighbor for awhile, and played some XBOX. Truly a night to remember.

On Sunday we made a quick and decisive trip to the grocery store. Also, I got boyfriend to agree to take me to see 'The Holiday.' I was just in one of those romantic comedy moods. I didn't want anything that would shatter my world, just some mindless, fun entertainment at the theater. We race there to make it in time. The previews come on, the previews cut off. The previews come on, the previews cut off. Repeat cycle. Some guy comes in to pass out reimbursement tickets and assures us that the movie will begin shortly. Repeat previous cycle a few times. Forty-five minutes later another guy shrugs that the movie probably isn't going to work. "So, should we go?" we wonder. Who knows. It's a big mystery. We left, no movie.

That was a bummer. I was all hyped up to see a holiday romantic comedy. I went to the video store downstairs to try to satisfy my romantic comedy desires, and I rented 'The Break-up.' I know that I make other people sad when I crap all over things they like, but seriously, do you really like The Break-Up? A movie where two people scream for two hours and then don't even satisfy the classic cliche of reuniting in the end? This movie seriously pissed me off and didn't help my problem at all.

But, I decided to stop being lame, and I picked up a book I've been meaning to read that's been beckoning me from the bookshelf for a few weeks now - White Teeth. So far it's great, and I'm thrilled.

Other lovely news from the weekend is that I tried out the other trial pair of contacts I picked up since the O2 Optix weren't working out. These are Acuvue Oasys, worn by Olympic figure skater Tanith Belbin & Ben Agosto! These contacts are really working out for me! I highly recommend them to anyone who spends long periods of time in front of the computer, gets frequent headaches or tired eyes, or works in any other environment that's not conducive to contacts. Also, I love Tanith & Ben... and figure skating... and the Olympics!

I could mention some crap about my Monday at work, but why tarnish such a great weekend? Hope you all had a good one as well! Don't let Monday get you down.

I hate Cosi

I'm sorry to say, this is a bit of a rant... there's just no way around it today.

Have you ever been to a restaurant named Cosi? It's much like Panera Bread, Au Bon Pain, or any other mostly-sandwich-soup-salad-sometimes-breakfast-and-croissants kinda place. It looks like it's a chain mostly in the eastern half of the country.

My first time at Cosi, I went with a coworker during lunch. It was decent, and actually even enjoyable. Their specialty is the flat bread they use to make their sandwiches. The only thing I didn't like about the place was their prices... $7.50 for one frickin' sandwich!

So, I enjoyed it the first time. And I usually don't get that excited about sandwiches or lunch places; I'm much more of a breakfast and dinner person. But my boyfriend loves lunch, and we happened to have a Cosi right next to our apartment also, so I took him.

This place was not crowded like the first one I'd been to. And when I asked for my sandwich, the woman looked confused. She'd never heard of that sandwich... what? She asked me how to make it. It turned out slightly wrong, we didn't get our free side of carrots, most of the registers were closed and we had no idea where to pay, etc. This kind of service doesn't make you feel good about the almost $10 you spent.

We'd sworn off Cosi; the hell with it! Then last week my boss gave me a Cosi gift card that came in the mail. Fine, I'm a sucker for free things. I activated the card online and it was for $10. Great, I thought, that will buy me one whole lunch. Since the first restaurant I went to wasn't that bad, I figured I'd just go back. It was a free lunch, after all.

After waiting in line for almost 10 minutes, which actually feels like quite a while and eats up most of your already too short lunch break, they ordered me the wrong sandwich. When I finally got it and went to pay at the register, the gift card conveniently wasn't working. "Will it work at any other register?" I asked. "No, do you have any other form of payment?"

The whole reason I went was because it would be free! I'm very disciplined about bringing my lunch to work, not going out every single day and flushing away my money, and now I'm stuck paying for an overpriced sandwich that I didn't even want. And I didn't get the damn carrots again!

A more awesome, more assertive person would have just said, "stuff your sandwich, I'm outta here!" But I paid for it, like a jackass. But you better believe I'm not going back this time... not even if I get FIVE gift cards! What a perfect scam for them, mail out some crappy bogus gift cards, get people to put their address online to register it so that they inadvertently sign up for all kinds of junk mail and spam, and then when they come into the store thinking it will all be free, give them a nice punch in the face that they never saw coming!

Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice...

Here are some links to others who hate Cosi... unite!

Cosi vs. Panera
"I went to Cosi for the first time today because I'd hoped it'd be a suitable Panera replacement. It wasn't."

"I hate Cosi! Everytime I get a sandwich there I think WTF did I do!!
$7.00 for a piece of thin ass bread, Mozzarella, tomato, basil, and vinagerette. Oh, and a bag of salty chips....."

The original what's for lunch
"I totally agree about Cosi... sucky for lunch. And the people in the one near my office are so rude - like they're doing you a favour. Argh. Haaaaaate. Speaking of channeling hate. Last time I almost had my card for a free salad filled up I was determined to get the free salad & then never go back. Then, on my free salad day, I got into a minor altercation with the sandwich lady (beyotch wouldn't make me a salad - they can't seem to decide if there's a separate line for salads, or just one line for both) & then the manager came over & said my salad was free! So I had to go back *again*!! Curses!"

"cosi sucks ass. salads are so expensive and they all taste kinda the same...like mcdonald's has something in their food that makes everything from the fries to the quarter pounder have this common taste in it...freaks me out, man."

LizLawson.blogspot.com
"I hate Cosi. I go there nearly every single day for lunch and it's starting to really bug me. It's disgusting. Agh!"

Yelp.com
"I hate Cosi for single-handedly raising the price of a DC lunch by $2-3."

Win/Lose

This has probably been my busiest work week yet. My responsibilities have doubled, and I've been feel rather sick all week as well. BUT...

My "In case of zombies" shirt from Threadless! came yesterday! The design is great, the fabric is good because it's that thinner, softer kind of fabric instead of what you'd expect on a man's t-shirt, but damn am I glad I opted for the bigger size. These things are built rather small, despite what the size chart says. Also shipping took a little longer than what my greedy hands normally like, but hey, I'm flexible.

Earlier in the week my Sunsilk sample also came! The sample comes with a tester of the shampoo, conditioner, and 24/7 creme (you choose which type you need). It also comes with a $1 off coupon on either the shampoo or conditioner and a $1 off coupon on the 24/7 creme! It's a sweet deal, and if you haven't ordered your sample yet I suggest that you do! Today I am trying the 24/7 creme (I had only bought the shampoo and conditioner), and so far I like it. I don't think I've ever used a creme in my hair afterwards; I usually use a gel or mousse. We'll give it the 24 hour test and then see how it is!

Also, Virginia decided she is ready for a Democrat Senator but not for same-sex marriages or civil unions. In fact, Virginia is not for the rights of any non-married couples, even with members of the opposite sex. But, I guess she's come a long way, so I can't complain. I never thought Virginia would have a Democrat in the Senate, she showed me. I honestly had a hard time debating same-sex marriages. But after many conversations with friends and many stories about couples living together for 30 years and then one was left with nothing or couldn't come into the hospital room while their partner was dying, I was able to see it differently. I'm wary of change, I just like to have the whole story and think about it from every angle. But not allowing same-sex couples to be able to commit to and provide for one another seems rather unfair. Maybe next time, Virginia.

And here's another excellent video. Maybe you've seen it before, but it still entertains me every time I watch. Happy Friday!
